I remember the first time I tried it was with one colleague from the same level, in the same school, and we decided to pair them anonymously (we knew they didn´t) until the last task, where they met and became best friends forever.⁣
⁣
The second time I tried this technique, I was already in Spain, where I received a request from a German teacher asking me if we could match schools on LinkedIn for a penpal activity. ⁣
⁣
I absolutely agreed and, in my school, they were all thrilled. It was perfect since my students knew that their pals would never ever understand any word of Spanish; it was through English the only way to communicate. ⁣
Parents got involved, too, and the project became big and serious.⁣
⁣
I’ve seen that the limit of these activities is in ourselves, and there are so many other ideas that can work perfectly within our range of possibilities and imagination. ⁣

I won’t lie to you, creating great portfolios re

I won’t lie to you, creating great portfolios requires much of my home time to write and re-listen or watch my recordings; for that reason, I just do 1 every term to measure their progress as students, as a class, and with me. But the result is astonishing for me, for the school, and for their parents.⁣
I love Parent Involvement, not to do their homework for them but to research together a topic we’re working on in class, so I share guidelines with them on how they can contribute to the process, reinforcing English learning outside the classroom. ⁣
⁣
Not only research but also to include photos, drawings, or notes related to their child's English language experiences.⁣
⁣
At the end of it, I use a couple of classes for each student to “Show and Tell” about their own experience, watching their progress and explaining what they did in each part. ⁣
⁣
Since each one is different, we all love and get very curious about what others have done, so they remain silent the whole presentation.⁣

There are so many great opportunities to make our students get involved in many activities where they can use the English Language specially if you love the theme! It creates like a contagious effect where they enjoy, talk, and participate so smoothly they don't even realize that they are learning some grammar structure, using some expressions while naming and describing specific vocabulary and process.

I've learned to take care of my voice the hard way! Always losing my precious tool! Being voiceless and still giving English classes...What a horror!
I'm very delicate with this matter, so I do these tips and some others like wearing scarves, rubbing VapoRub or drinking hot lemonade with honey like a grandma 🤣 from time to time.

Some ideas of PBL projects I have used with my English language learners are:⁣
• Making a class book about animals⁣
• Creating a weather chart⁣
• Designing a restaurant menu⁣
• Creating and running an Ice Cream truck.⁣
• Paleontologist for a day⁣
• Traveling deep down the sea, among others.⁣

I discovered a new world by implementing PBL in my English language learning classes because I saw all the language structures & goals run smoothly in their little unconscious minds. They used the English language as a means to get an ultimate goal and NOT as a goal itself. Besides improving their language skills, we worked a lot on building critical thinking using English to express their ideas and also developed their problem-solving abilities in a fun and engaging way.⁣

I know we learnt it in theory that repetition & reinforcement are the key to language learning, but when teaching sometimes you are more worried to complete the planning and the language syllabus than making sure each and everyone of your students really know what you're teaching!

I'd felt like in a constant crazy race or like Indiana Jones being chased by a giant Boulder... Until I realized that nobody was winning on this constant race! So I stopped running. Do you know what I mean?

I'm telling this, I don't care if you think you use enough repetition & reinforcement in your classes, Do More! there's always more to be done, more exercises, more improv, more singing, more role-plays, you name it... variety is always the 🗝️ Make sure they ALL feel comfortable using English every day.

I didn’t know anything about Waldorf until 2013

I didn’t know anything about Waldorf until 2013 when I read a book called “The Wonder Approach: Rescuing Children's Innate Desire to Learn” by Catherine L’Ecuyer and she mentioned this pedagogy, among others.

Life then accidentally took me to walk that path & in the first school I worked, they used some of this methodology.

This view I share here with you is nothing more than my own experience and what, according to me, should complement our teachings in the ELT.

Know that through this personalized approach, language learning becomes an adventure filled with discovery and empowerment.

In my humble opinion (based on my own experience)

In my humble opinion (based on my own experience) I think we need to focus more and more on these skills; we need to plan classes that develop speaking & listening almost 100% until they are 6 or 7.
Once the language is consolidated (English but specially their L1), we can move on to other things. I’ve seen many students struggle because we adults like to pressure them to achieve our adult standards (the younger, the better, right?) instead of observing and respecting every kid's learning pace. I have also observed some whose natural desire for learning to decode letters is amazing, but for what I've seen they are a few.

🧒🏼 The games I propose here are incredible tools for teaching English to young kids who can't read yet! Not only do they make learning enjoyable, but they also provide valuable benefits for language development. 🗣️

🎲 Always engage kids to have positive experiences, building vocabulary and reinforcing grammar concepts so they actively participate while boosting their language skills. 📣

By combining playfulness and education, we ignite their love for English, nurturing a lifelong passion for language learning. 💖

I'm not a PhD on anything (yet) but I speak my view for what I've seen and experienced in classrooms.
